Health regulators remain cautious about vitamin D, but is there a reason for that? Who stands to benefit? If vitamin D turns out to offer major protection against cancer, what will happen to the profits of companies making expensive cancer treatment drugs?

NEARLY 80% OF PEOPLE DON’T GET ENOUGH VITAMIN D
Studies show around 77 percent of people have either insufficient or clinically ‘deficient’ Vitamin D levels.

WHY DO WE NEED IT?
New research shows nearly every organ in our bodies is designed to use vitamin D. If you don’t have enough to go around, your health suffers.

HOW SERIOUS IS IT?
Deadly serious. People with low levels of vitamin D have double or triple the risk of dying from heart disease or cancer, compared to those with high levels of vitamin D. Take this recent report on its impact on breast cancer survival:

Lack of adequate levels of vitamin D in the body increases the risk of death in breast cancer patients, a study by Canadian researchers has indicated.

Researchers at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto followed 512 women who were newly diagnosed with breast cancer. The women had their cancer treated at three Toronto hospitals and were tracked for an average of 12 years.

Researchers found that just 24 percent of the women had adequate levels of vitamin D. More alarmingly women with low vitamin D levels were 94 percent more likely to have their cancer spread to other parts of the body within a decade and 73 percent more likely to die from it

WHAT ABOUT PREGNANCY?
The new research is showing moms whose vitamin D levels are low are significantly more likely to have babies who later develop autism, mental illness or multiple sclerosis, as well as asthma and other nasties.

WHY INTERVIEW IAN INSTEAD OF A RESEARCHER?
Whereas a researcher can talk in depth about the study they’re involved in, sometimes they are not across the wider research field. Ian Wishart is utterly up with all the latest research on vitamin D and is interviewed on the topic several times a week. As an experienced radio and TV journalist and broadcaster, he knows exactly what you need and gets straight to the point.
